Built behind an enormous stone spire called “Jedah” by the Montegans, Rockport sits on the southern tip of the Lake of Drya’s Blood on the River Rose. Built simply as “South Lake Town”, it became was named Rockport when Montega was conquered by the Baridorian Empire a century and a half ago.

Rockport is composed of mostly squat, wooden buildings. Further from the lake are larger town houses and a few large, walled manors with grounds. Several prominent buildings, such as churches, some government buildings, and a few schools are stone-walled towers. Most architecture includes thick shutters, tall doors, and clay-tiled roofs. Older building often bear owl and tree motifs common among the Montegans. Nearer to the lake, the brick-paved streets are fairly narrow and often cracked and uneven. Further south, and along the two main streets from the docks, the roads are wide and well maintained. Notable features of Rockport include its slender black streetlamps, a dozen marble statues of heroes of both sides of the Baridorian Conquest, the wharf, the sewer, the cemetery, the impressive Unified Faiths Church, the Castivan School of Wizardry, the Baridorian University of Lower Lochland, the Lord’s Library, and Rockport Keep – the oldest castle in Montega.

Outside the city walls are tall, white lighthouses which dot the lake’s edge, the rancid garbage pits to the south-east, a plethora of ancient monoliths, and the signal tower which stands on the hilltop to the cities east, beyond Jedah.

Many of the buildings still stand near the lake’s edge, the Red Griffon Inn among them, have stood for over a hundred-and-fifty years. The old, wooden stockade, now replaced by a thick, stone wall, was burned down, along with much of South Lake Town. A Montegan war band, lead by Chief Moah the Bloody, took the fortification and held off the mighty Baridorian for one-hundred and twenty days. A statue of Chief Moah now stands in the market place on the place he fell. The old city was unplanned, but the last century has seen plotted development which has helped Rockport become a major commercial hub. Timber, fishing, and boatwrighting are among the cities chief industries, and many merchants work within the city walls. Guilds are prominent in Rockport. The most powerful is the Rockport Merchants Guild, which protects the interests of local merchants over foreigners. The Foresters’ Guild, Lumber Millers’ Guild, Fur Trappers’ Guild, Boatwrights’ Guild, and Wagoneers’ Guild are also large and influential. The final guild of major influence in the city is the Snake-Eyes’ Guild, a band of organized criminals, delving mostly into gambling, but involved in numerous shady and illegal ventures.

Many religions are represented in Rockport. The Faith has the largest number of professors, but Wayists and Dryans aren’t hard to find. Other religions, both old and new, have centers of worship inside the city or on its outskirts. All of these faiths are publicly at odds and sew much resentment for themselves among Rockport’s citizenry. This has given rise to a new church. The most powerful religious organization in Rockport is the Unified Faiths of the Realms. This growing church is now found throughout the Empire, but has its headquarters here. It’s a unified church, seeing all faiths as equally relavent, all religions as pointing to God, and opening its doors to the practitioners of any religion. The Church of the Faith still holds higher influence among the aristocracy and the poor, but the flourishing middleclass is being swayed to the Unifists.

The citizens of Rockport come in several varieties. The majority are Merianites, with Montegans making up a large minority. Dwarves, Thanonites, Quids, Baask, and ogres are not uncommon. Many transients pass through this crossroads as well. What they all seem to have in common is business, success, and willingness to take advantage. Rockport wants to be “big-city” and seems well underway. Feasts and festivals of both Baridor and Montega are celebrated widely, including Imperial Montegan Day (remembering the day Montega was conquered) and Chief Moah’s Day (remembering the birth of the Montegan war chief). Days are busy in Rockport. The market closes an hour before sunset, as do all shops. While some work into the night, most Rockportians play after sunset, enjoying gatherings in taverns and commonrooms, nightfishing, and (for a few) secret gambling dens. Other events which draw crowds are public hangings, weekly quarterstaff competitions, and seasonal jousts and archery competitions.
